While nerves control the power of your physical body, nadis control the power of your subtle body. Nadis are like nerve channels of the subtle or ethereal body. Nadis first written in the Upanishads, derives from the Sanskrit word nad, which means flow, motion or vibration. The nadis are like river, flows like irrigation system nourishing our body with subtle vital energy that so called Prana, Chi, or Ki.

According to Upanishads, the human body contains 72,000 nadis that act as vehicles for the circulation of life force in our ethereal energy system (picture #1, click to view it). When this system flows freely, we are vital and healthy and on the contrary we will suffer with physical and mental problems.

Chakras are the gate, the entrance of energy to our subtle body and Nadis are the circulation system. So now you know, let’s learn more.
There are three main nadis:

  1. Shushumna, which goes up from the base of the spine to the crown of the head (Sahasrara Chakra), passing through each of the 7 Major Chakras
  2. Ida, which has female polarity (negative in electrical terms), generally associated with the moon, cool energy, Shakti (female), represented by the color blue.
  3. Pingala, which has male polarity (positive in electrical terms), generally associated with the sun, warm energy, Shiva (male), represented by the color red.

Ida and Pingala begin on either side of Muladhara Chakra (Base/Root) and weave back and forth around the spinal area (picture #2, the blue line is Ida and the red one is Pingala). They cross at the base of the skull and run over the top of the nose and end one at each corner of the nose. Ida starts from the left side of the tailbone and terminates at the left nostril and Pingala starts from the right side of the tailbone and terminates at the right nostril.
